Paige is an offline English dictionary for iPhone. It is built so that what you look up stays yours: Paige does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal data. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking and no third-party code in the app, and Paige makes no network requests of its own.
Where your data lives
- The dictionary is on your iPhone. Every look-up is answered from the dictionary that ships inside the app. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
- History and saved words stay on your iPhone. The words you look up and save are stored in a database on your device, so you can find them again. The developer has no server and never receives them. Clear History in Paige's Settings deletes your history; deleting the app deletes everything.
- Widgets. To show Your Words on the Home Screen and Lock Screen, Paige shares your saved words with its own widget through storage on your device.
- Settings. Your preferences (such as the pronunciation accent) are stored on your device.
Voice
When you tap the microphone or turn on Voice Mode, Paige uses the microphone to hear the word you say. Speech is recognised on your iPhone by Apple's speech recognition, with no server fallback: audio and transcripts are never recorded, stored or sent anywhere by Paige. The first time you use voice, iOS may download Apple's speech model for your language; that download comes from Apple and contains nothing about you. Paige only listens while the microphone or Voice Mode is on, and you can revoke microphone access in iOS Settings at any time.
Apple Intelligence
On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Paige can write an example sentence for a meaning that has none. It uses Apple's on-device model: the word and its definition are processed on your iPhone and are not sent to Paige's developer or anyone else. You can turn this off in Paige's Settings → Write missing examples.
Siri, Shortcuts and Spotlight
If you ask Siri to "define a word in Paige", Siri handles your request under Apple's Privacy Policy and passes the word to Paige, which answers from its on-device dictionary.
Pronunciation
Words are read aloud with the voices built into iOS, on your device.
Links
Links in Paige's Settings (Wiktionary, the licence, this page and the support page) open in your web browser. Those websites have their own privacy policies.
Crash reports
If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in iOS Settings (Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements), Apple may provide the developer with anonymous crash reports. These are collected by Apple, not by Paige, and contain none of your words.
Children
Paige is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
Changes
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new date above. Because Paige collects nothing, any change that started collecting data would also require an app update and would be described in it.
