Common questions

Does Paige need an internet connection?

No. The whole dictionary, about 600,000 words, is on your iPhone, so look-ups work in airplane mode. The first time you use voice, iOS may download its speech model once.

How do I look up a word by voice?

Tap the microphone in the search bar and say the word, or ask "what does ephemeral mean?". If the word sounds like others, such as there, their and they're, Paige lists them so you can pick. Speech is recognised on your iPhone and never leaves it.

What is Voice Mode?

Tap the round waveform button next to the search bar. Paige keeps listening while you read: ask about a word and its entry appears, with other words it might have heard one tap away. Tap the listening bar to pause, or ✕ to stop. It pauses by itself after 20 quiet minutes or when you leave the app.

How do I open Paige from the Lock Screen or the Action Button?

Add the Look Up a Word or Say a Word control: in Control Center or on the Lock Screen, edit the controls and search for Paige; for the Action Button, go to Settings → Action Button → Controls. You can also say "Define a word in Paige" to Siri.

Why do some examples say "Example written on device"?

When a meaning has no example sentence in the dictionary, Apple Intelligence writes one on your iPhone (on iPhones that support it) and Paige marks it. You can turn this off in Paige's Settings → Write missing examples.

Where do the definitions come from?

From Wiktionary's contributors, adapted (shortened and reformatted) under the CC BY-SA 4.0 licence; word frequencies come from wordfreq. Like any complete dictionary, Paige includes vulgar and offensive words, labelled as such. If an entry is wrong, open an issue with the word.

Does Paige need an account?

No. There's no sign-up, no ads and no server: your look-ups and saved words stay on your iPhone. See the Privacy Policy.
